Who is Anohito (あのひと)?

updatedFebruary 10, 2016

So who exactly is Anohito (あのひと) — that person whom Candy presumably married in Candy Candy Final Story? For those of us who have read the translations and Italian edition of the Final Story, the answer to this question is clear.

Candy Candy Final Story by Keiko Nagita

Anohito (あのひと) Revealed

Anohito (あのひと) is none other than Terence Graham Granchester –son of a Duke, accomplished Shakespearean actor and above all, the only man whom Candy “loved more than anyone else.” (CC Final Story, Vol. 2, pg. 143).

Why are we so convinced?

Thanks to the collaborative effort and shared ideas and contributions of international fans, we managed to collect the most faithful translations possible and better examine the meaning behind the ambiguous maze of clues the author left behind. While it is true that the author purposely obscured the identity of “anohito” so that each fan is free to believe who he might be, the evidence leading to Terry was overwhelmingly clear.

Terry is surely and indisputably, “anohito – あのひと”. We strongly believe this.

Terry is anohito あのひと!

And this blog will prove once and for all why he is the one and only choice for Candy.

To begin with, we invite you to read this post, highlighting  Scottie’s enlightening essay and analysis on the nature of “anohito”! Although her point of view is featured in this site, there are other compelling and solid arguments from devoted fans that you’re encouraged to read at the Candy & Terry Forum.

So do not despair if you’ve recently watched (or rewatched) the anime or read the manga then felt frustrated and depressed! There is HOPE for Candy & Terry fans in the Candy Candy Final Story novel. The author made sure of it. 🙂 Believe! 😉

Terry is anohito あのひと!

Who is Anohito? Certainly not Albert. HE is Candy’s adoptive father. HE signed the legal papers. No matter what anyone says, Albert adopted Candy. Even if Candy only regarded him as a benefactor, brother or friend, and even if Albert himself never regarded himself as a “father”, the law is the law. Their personal feelings do not negate the legal truth. Furthermore, there is nothing in the CCFS to indicate any kind of annulment of adoption or even any intention from Albert to vacate his parental responsibility. Despite her claim for independence, Candy still continued to sign her letters as “Candice White Ardlay” even as a working adult. In her letter to Eleanor Baker written after the end of WWI in 1918, she signed it as an Ardlay and she was at least 20 years old. At this time she was still considering herself a part of the Ardlay family. And no, this does not mean she was secretly married to Albert and took his last name instead. I recognize the need for some people to make things up to fit their own “truths” as well as their right to live in their own fantasy bubble. But the facts are there for anyone who chooses not to turn a blind eye. Adoption requires parental obligations that I felt Albert tried his best to follow when he sent Candy away to St. Paul’s School for a better education. At 24 (the age he adopted Candy), he was not that young to assume his parental responsibility, but it was mostly lacking, probably in part due to Albert’s sense of immaturity. Instead of owning up to it, he preferred to remain anonymous, communicate “as needed” through Georges while indulging in his freedom to travel and do his own work. Hardly a model parent and some would use this as an excuse to say he can’t be considered as Candy’s “father” because he never acted as one. True, he never raised her in the traditional sense, but not behaving as a father does not erase the fact that he is still legally her adoptive father with moral and legal parental obligations. His lack of presence as a “father figure” with minimal communication to his daughter only makes him appear less as a responsible parent.

      So true, yuki! 😉

And this is what Albert has to say about his role as “adoptive father” in the CCFS. Grazie to fairiesloveto for this translation from the Italian CCFS:

Letter from Vol. 2, pg. 227 of Candy Candy Lettere (Italian edition of CCFS)

      A cursory greeting for Candy

I am writing you a small lament. You promised me you wouldn’t submit me to anymore of your vendetta right? So what do you mean with this “father”? And what do you want to say with “beautiful daughter”.
Yes certainly, you are beautiful…perhaps(have I made you angry), and I certainly can’t ignore that you are my adopted daughter. In effect I forgot. I am still young, celibate, but I already have a daughter… it’s a thing that surprises me.
Even the term “adopted daughter” sounds insupportable to my ears. It doesn’t seem like it but I am a delicate type (don’t laugh!).
Changing the subject, I am heading for San Paolo. I’ll write to you when I get there. Please tell Miss Pony and Sister Lane that I have done only all that is expected of a good adopted father. Adoptive father? Oh, no! I have said it myself…
Keep well, and greet the children for me!

      Albert

In this letter, even if the idea is “insupportable” and strange to him, Albert can’t deny (and can’t ignore — in his own words) that he is Candy’s adoptive father and that Candy is his adoptive daughter. 😉 Nor should his fans deny and ignore this.

Terry was just a teenage passionate crush.

Dear Terry, every time I talk with you in my mind, my heart is like a mature bittersweet apricot that could fall to the ground at the smallest breeze. In those moments I am almost afraid to breathe.

I think that Terrence might actually be Anohito. First of all because in my opinion it is difficult to believe that Candy could still be single after a ten-year- separation from Terry if she was in love with Albert. When did she actually start considering him something different from her friend/brother/uncle/father? where is the proof of that chance in her feelings? In a letter to the late Anthony she said that when she was in London she had fallen hard for someone, and she was spoken about Terry! What about her falling for Albert then? Despite the fact of him always being there for her, before Terrence, while Terrence was her beau (Candy and Albert even lived together at that time) and after Terrence, never has transpired that Candy and Albert were romantically involved. They never married, and never have Candy and Albert shared letters in which emerged the kind of love that usually occurs between a man and a woman in love. Actually, in those letters, she addressed him as Mr Albert (the Japanese Albert san), on the other hand five years, more or less, after they broke up, Candy writes a letter to Terrence, which she never sent, whose tone makes one perceive her longing and tenderness, betraying that she was still thinking of him and suffering for their separation. Having said that, I am inclined to think that Candy is still single because like Terry (who wrote after ten years to tell her that nothing has changed within him) nothing has changed within her as well, she simply can’t go over her love for a man from whom she was once separated by events that were far beyond their control.
Secondly: It seems that the author once said, she has thought of Candy experiencing three kinds of love. And she refers to Candy’s love for Albert as a peaceful, lifetime, or I believe, fateful love, in contraposition with Terry’s passionate love, however, by depicting the bond between Candy and Albert that way she certainly states the solidity and importance of their relationship lasting all their lives but she doesn’t imply that a romance has ever going on between the two, therefore it is possible to imagine their love like a strong affection that soothes pains, that comforts in difficult times, that supports throughout life, we all know he has always been his beacon and she his, but a romantic liaison is not necessarily implied here. I believe what she meant was that Albert’s love for Candy has been a constant during all her life, something she could always rely on, because it won’t falter, but that can easily be said also of the affection coming from a brother, a close friend, someone who is “family”. Mizuki herself, in the story, states that there are different kinds of love, besides that, can one honestly dissociate passion from romantic love? Who frankly aspires to a relationship with a partner without passion in it? So why would Candy, who is still young, barely 30, want to marry and be together with a man for whom she doesn’t feel passion but just peace and steadiness, this is what we expect from a lifetime friend, not from a lover and certainly not from a husband, unless she would content herself with a brotherly sort of marriage, not of the kind that makes her heart beat fast anyway. Usually peacefulness comes later in a relationship when passion subsides. And finally the Box matter. To believe that Terrence could not have had it from his father, because the duke must have handed it to his wife it is not a convincing argument in my opinion. The object is not something that Richard Grandchester should necessarily have given to a wife whom, by the way, he never loved and whom he married just out of convention and social status, he might have kept it instead, and later given it to his first son and heir. Terrence was by all means a Grandchester, nobody in the world knows, except Candy of course, who his real mother is, he was taken away from her when he was a little boy and his birth out of wedlock was kept secret in order to preserve his position, we don’t know on what conditions the duchess has accepted and submitted to that, anyway it was him who refused to use his real name when became an actor because of the grudge he bore against his father, so we can easily speculate that if later in the story he and his father have made up and he has been reinstated in his father esteem, he could have been given the box, whom he presented to his wife Candy. This is a possibility that does make sense to me, on the other hand it is a fact that the box can hardly be an Andrew’s heirloom if we consider, as Scottie observed in a very illuminating essay, that in Final Story the author said that the box (which is apparently a precious relic) has been handed down from generations to generations in Anohito’s family. Now the Andrews are newly rich, their fortune is recent and started with Albert’s grandfather, just three generations previously, when he left Scotland to go to the US to seek his fortune, for that reason it is quite improbable that such an object might have been in the Andrew’s possession for many generations. It is more probable that it has belonged to the Grandchesters whose origin as a Dukedom goes back many generations for sure.
Thanks and Sorry for my lenghy explanation

I doubt here… We all know that the author just want to make the reader to be sure that candy is finally happy, and purposly hide her man to keep the pure and passionate imagination of many generations who loved this manga… So, we will have accept the fact that she must tried to put various detail to neglect the reader, and there would be a certain number of image, words, things (have to) related to both men (Terry and Albert).
Since then, I believe some very small details such as book, flower daffodils, Shakespear books were put in the novel for that sake. But I noticed one details that the luxury jewel box that HIM gave to Candy… Hmm I sure that both Grandchester and Ardley clan have that kind of box, but somehow i believe that Terry could not be the one to hand it to Candy, you know, his father the Duke, must hand that box to his wife (the ugly pig) since she’s the official wife and she lived with the Duke so long, had 3 children… So even if Terry were once again recognized and heired the Duke from this Dad, it’s be impossible to regain the box, or at least, Terry – the man I so adore – could not do such a thing: ASK his father’s wife to gave back the box. On the other hand, we have Albert, the one, the only heir of Ardley clan, it makes more sense to me that he had that one for his wife.

Finally, since I were 8 when I read this manga first, I dreamed that Candy and Terry, I almost noticed nothing about Albert. But you know, as I grow old 😀 30 almost, been through quite much love story of my own, I see through that Albert might be the one that the author means here. The passion love is not way easy to find out, but we always have it once, but to make a passionate love into the lifetime love, it has to be more. You know, we love s.o. very much, but thing turned out be super bad after marriage :)) thats why we have so many divorces, but look at Candy and Albert, they lived once together, they share every deepest thought, feels in their heart, and still feel love for each other… That’s what marriage / lifetime love made for, to know, to accept, to live with all the good and the bad of each other. for this… I feel Terry is not that man. As the author, she claimed before: Anthony – a child’s love, Terry – a passionate love, and Albert – a lifetime love.

I having my lifetime love now :D, and forgive me If i say sometimes I still feel so passionate, such a crush when I met a guy :)) Lolzzzzzzz but its no way to compare to my husband!
